Family

My family is made up largely of chosen family. It’s the path of so many of us in the LGBTQ community. I’m incredibly lucky to have the family I have forged over the years since I was kicked out. It’s full of caring compassionate people who love me without hesitation. They don’t care that I come with baggage. That I have disabilities or that my mental health isn’t great. They are always there when I need them.

I know I’m one of the fortunate ones. It’s taken almost ten years to cultivate a family I feel safe with who will tell me  things exactly as they are and who I know won’t let me down. And to have a second chance at being someone’s child has blown me away. I can tell my Momma anything and she won’t judge. And by the same token, she has shown me that she will do whatever she can to keep me safe.

This post is for all of you out there who don’t have that support network right now. Don’t give up. There are people out there who want to be your family. Who will love the real you. It doesn’t matter if you are part of the LGBTQ community or another marginalised group, you have so much love waiting for you. Take each day as it comes and remember, not everyone will turn you away.
